Highlights from the PAPILLONS-MINAGRIS Stakeholder Forum in Brussels, 8 April 2025

The PAPILLONS consortium was proud to host its final stakeholder forum, marking the closing chapter of four years of collaborative research on the sources, behaviour and ecological effects of micro and nanoplastics in European agricultural soils, resulting from the use of agricultural plastics.

Held in Brussels, the event brought together more than 150 policymakers, researchers, industry, and international organisations for a rich exchange on science-policy priorities. We were honoured to welcome MEPs Alessandra Moretti and Annalisa Corrado, alongside leading researchers, DG Environment officials, and colleagues from FAO, and our sister-project MINAGRIS.

Through expert panels, our speakers addressed several crucial aspects related to plastic contamination of soils, such as:

– The Soil Monitoring Law as a strategic opportunity for soil protection in the EU;

– The environmental, social and economic impact of microplastic pollution;

– Concrete pathways towards more sustainable use and management of agricultural plastics.

As PAPILLONS, we are grateful for the engagement and commitment of all panelists and participants. This closing event was not only a moment to share the results of years of research, it was also a collective call to continue pushing forward for more sustainable, evidence-based solutions for agricultural practices in Europe.
